  • Acadia 100th Events

    Acadia National Park and their partners are sponsoring an amazing series of events around the park and community for the NPS Centennial. Listed below are the main park celebrations, but there are many more.


    2016 Events

    Feburary 26 to March 6, 2016 - Acadia Winter Festival
    Time: Various.
    Location: Schoodic Peninsula Feb. 26-March 1; Mount Desert Island March 2-6.
    Event: Held at two locations over two weekends, celebrate the Centennial and Acadia National Park with offer fun activities to help people discover and explore the natural world in winter.


    April 9, 2016 - Lego Day, Seal Cove Auto Museum
    Time: 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
    Location: Seal Cove Auto Museum.
    Event: Come play with us! Kids of all ages are invited to come and be inspired by the unique collection of cars and motorcycles built at the time of Acadia National Park's birth, and then create their own automobile inspiration with the museum's Lego brand blocks. This is also an opportunity to preview the new choose-your-own adventure exhibit Auto Wars: Then and Now, which explores the impact of community decisions on the landscape 100 years ago, before the Auto Museum opens for the season in May.


    April 30, 2016 - National Junior Ranger Day
    Time: 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
    Location: Camp Beach Cliff.
    Event: Try your hand at tracking animals, creating outdoor art, and enjoy over a dozen other activities. Kids can earn a special badge at this debut of the Centennial Junior Ranger program. Participate in the launch of FOA Acadia Centennial Quest, a multi-day experiential scavenger hunt in the park featuring activities designed for families to complete on their own schedule. Come prepared for rain or shine. Picnics are welcome, carpooling encouraged.


    June 3, 2016 - Art Walk Bar Harbor
    Time: 6:00 to 9:00 pm.
    Location: Downtown Bar Harbor.
    Event: start of First Friday Art Walks in downtown Bar Harbor with a special salute to Acadia National Park in the centennial year.


    June 4, 2016 - National Trails Day, Centennial Edition
    Time: 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
    Location: Park Headquarters. Various. Check later at Friends of Acadia for place and time.
    Event: In honor of the centennial, Acadia National Park Poet Laureate and trail crew member Christian Barter will give a short reading and speak about the connection between trailwork and poetry. The day will feature a hike and a volunteer work project. Discover, enjoy, and care for Acadia's magnificent 130-mile trail system and FOA-sponsored Village Connector Trails and community trails, accompanied by park trail crew and interpretive staff members.


    June 19, 2016 - Acadia Off-Island Event
    Time: Various.
    Location: Upcoming.
    Event: Sponsored by the Friends of Acadia. Friends of Acadia is helping to plan a very special off-island event to celebrate Acadia's Centennial. Details forthcoming.


    June 25, 2016 - Sieur de Monts Nature Center Dedication
    Time: Upcoming.
    Location: Sieur de Monts, off Route 3 south of Bar Harbor.

    June 25, 2016 - Park Science Day: Film Screening
    Time: 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
    Location: Blackwoods, Seawall, and Schoodic Woods amphitheaters.
    Event: Join us at Blackwoods, Seawall, and Schoodic Woods amphitheaters for the debut screenings of David Shaw's new film highlighting science at Acadia National Park.


    July 9, 2016 - Gallery at Somes Centennial Open House and Reception
    Time: 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
    Location: Main Street, Somesville.
    Event: The Gallery at Somes Sound as we celebrate the Acadia National Park's Centennial Birthday. The Open House will begin at 12:00 noon followed by a cocktail reception from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.


    Aug 02, 2016 - Somes Sound Windjammer Parade
    Time: 2:00 pm.
    Location: Somes Sound, Mount Desert Island.
    Event: Maine's legendary fleet of windjammers will sail in company through Somes Sound, the body of water running deep into Mount Desert Island where dramatic 600-foot cliffs form the backdrop for this afternoon parade of sail.


    August 5-6, 2016 - Mount Desert Summer Chorale
    Time: 7:30 p.m.
    Location: St. Saviour's Episcopal Church, 41 Mount Desert Street, Bar Harbor.
    Event: The Mount Desert Summer Chorale's 2016 concerts honor the centennial of Acadia National Park with a program of music celebrating nature. Featured will be the world premiere of a new work commissioned for the Chorale by noted composer Ola Gjeilo.


    August 22, 2016 - Centennial of First Acadia Celebration
    Time: 2:00 p.m.
    Location: St. Saviour's Episcopal Church, 41 Mount Desert Street, Bar Harbor.
    Event: Reprise of the celebration on 8/22/1916 to conserve Acadia on its 100th anniversary.


    August 27, 2016 - Acadia Centennial Celebration
    Time: Various.
    Location: Acadia National Park Visitor Center.
    Event: Join park staff and partners in acknowledging the gift of Acadia National Park and celebrating its future. Free event.


    August 27, 2016 - Acadia Centennial Celebration, The Gift of Acadia
    Time: 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
    Location: Jordan Pond House, parking at MDI High School.
    Event: One hundred years ago, the vision and generosity of a few made it possible for this place to be universally enjoyed and protected as a National Park. Celebrate the gifts, past and present, that make Acadia what it is today. Highlights will include The Centennial Singers, a chorus of one hundred voices, a ceremony acknowledging the achievements of one hundred Junior Rangers, and special presentations. A special parking lot and shuttle service will begin at 7 am from Mount Desert Island High School. Lots at Jordan Pond House will be closed except for handicapped-accessible access.


    September 22-25, 2016 - Acadia Night Sky Festival
    Time: Upcoming.
    Location: Various locations on Mount Desert Island.
    Event: The park and partners present workshops, internationally recognized speakers and activities celebrating the starlit skies of Downeast Maine. A public star-gazing event on Cadillac Mountain will take place Saturday. Parking and shuttle from Mount Desert Island High School.


    September 26, 2016 - America's Best Idea - A Night with Dayton Duncan
    Time: Upcoming.
    Location: Criterion Theatre at 36 Cottage Street, Bar Harbor, ME 04609.
    Event: Join Friends of Acadia for a film screening of the six part series, The National Parks: America's Best Idea by Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan, including a Q & A with writer and co-producer Dayton Duncan.


    November 5, 2016 - Take Pride in Acadia Day
    Time: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    Location: Acadia National Park Headquarters on the Eagle Lake Road.
    Event: Volunteers descend upon Acadia's historic carriage roads to rake leaves and clear drainage ditches from up to ten miles of carriage roads in preparation for winter. The 2016 event will be an extra-special celebration of volunteerism and pride in Acadia, as we enter the final months of Acadia's centennial year.
