American Revolution 240th Celebrations

Special celebrations will be held in 2019 to commemorate the 240th anniversary of the various battles of the American Revolution. Check below for the events that are on the calendar or contact your local park to see if there's a special event there. We'll strive to keep you up to date when announcements come into focus. Throughout 2019, the American Revolution will be celebrated for that two hundred and forty years of United States history from Georgia to Indiana to Stony Point, New York, many in state parks. Take the time to visit this history at anniversary events of living history and battle walks at the places where they happened.

    January to December 1779


    February 3, 1779 - Battle of Point Royal Island, South Carolina
    Celebration Dates/Times: Not available.
    Location: Not available.
    Event: Events for the area can be found at Point Royal, although no specific events have yet been found about the 1779 battle.

    February 14, 1779 - Battle of Kettle Creek, Georgia
    Celebration Dates/Times: February 8-10, 2019.
    Location: Kettle Creek Battle Field; 106 War Hill Road; Washington, Ga 30673.
    Event: Revolutionary Days celebrations are held in Washington, Georgia, as well at Kettle Creek Battlefield and other locations. February 8 - 6:00 p.m. Walking Tour of the Battlefield. February 9 - 9:00 a.m. Colors Raised at Wilkes County Courthouse. Living History at Washington City Square. 10:45 - Revolutionary War Parade. 11:00 - Battle reenactment in Fort Washington Park. Robert Toombs Historic Site, City Museum, and Mary Willis Library open 9-5 with film on battle at library. February 10 - 9:00 Colonial Worship Service at Episcopal Church. For more specific, visit Washington-Wilkes Website.

    February 23-25, 1779 - Siege of Fort Vincennes (Sackville), Indiana
    Celebration Dates/Times: Memorial Day Weekend.
    Location: George Rogers Clark National Historic Site.
    Event: Details of the annual Vincennes Rendezvous and Encampment are still being prepared, but usually include four battle reenactments with 400-500 reenactors, living history, and entertainment that draws up to 35,000 visitors per year. Visit George Rogers Clark NHS for more details when they are made.

    March 3, 1779 - Battle of Brier Creek, Georgia
    Celebration Dates/Times: Not available.
    Location: Tuckahoe Wildlife Management Area, Sylvania, Georgia.
    Event: Battle of Brier Creek Memorial was dedicated on March 3, 2018 off Brannen's Bridge Road on four hundred acres of battlefield within the large Tuckahoe WMA. No details have yet been found about a 2019 event.

    June 20, 1779 - Battle of Stono Ferry, South Carolina
    Celebration Dates/Times: Not available.

    June 24, 1779 - Siege of Gibraltar
    Celebration Dates/Times: Not available.
    Location: Gibraltar, southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Mediterranean Sea.
    Event: Visit Gibraltar Tourism for information about their history walk covering the siege from 1779-1783 and future events.



    July 5-14, 1779 - Tryon's Raid 1779, Connecticut
    Celebration Dates/Times: July 13, 2019, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
    Location: Fort Nathan Hale, Woodward Ave., New Haven, CT 06512.
    Event: 240th Anniversary of Battle of New Haven, check out their Fairfield History Museum for any future info. Anniversary events for the Battle of Norwalk have in the past been held by the Norwalk Historical Society at Mill Hill Historic Park, but no events have yet been scheduled for 2019, although those announcements may appear in the near future.

    July 16, 1779 - Battle of Stony Point, New York
    Celebration Dates/Times: Usually held the weekend near the battle date. Not yet available.
    Location: Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site 44 Battlefield Rd., Stony Point, NY 10980.

    June 18 to September 27, 1779 - Sullivan/Clinton Expedition

    Event: Not available. Fort Stanwix has information on the expedition and may be the best site to contact about any expedition anniversary events.

    July 24 to August 14, 1779 - Penobscot Expedition, Maine

    September 7, 1779 - Capture of Fort Bute, West Florida (Louisiana)

    September 12-21, 1779 - Battle of Fort New Richmond, West Florida (Louisiana)

    September 16 to October 20, 1779 - Siege of Savannah (Second Battle), Georgia
    Celebration Dates/Times: Not available.
    Location: Savannah History Museum, 303 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Savannah, GA 31401, and Battlefield Memorial Park across the street.
