October 17, 2006 - The population of the United States reaches the milestone of three hundred million, taking only about forty years to gain one hundred million people since the two hundredth million person was added in 1967. At the same time, a vibrant debate on immigration policy, particularly illegal immigration, ensues across the nation.

The first United States census occured in 1790, as of the date August 2. It was mandated by Article I, Section 2 of the United States Constitution. In 1790, U.S. Marshals oversaw conducting the census by visiting all households, counting free white males over 16, free white males under 16, free white females, other free persons, and slaves. It took eighteen months to complete. Virginia had the highest population at 747,610, which included 292,627 slaves. The states of Maine and Massachusetts were the only states to have no slaves counted during the 1790 census.
