Chuckwalla National Monument

Chuckwalla National Monument

This land west of Palm Springs and continuing in contiguous form with other National Monuments or National Parks has been the sacred lands of many Native Americans for generations. It has now, with all its splendor, harsh lands, and heritage, been designated a National Monument through the Antiquities Act during the administration of President Biden on January 14, 2025. Biden designated ten new National Monuments during his tenure. The land here will be administered by the Bureau of Land Management, not the National Park Service, which, yes, sometimes gets confusing. But the vistas you will witness, the trails you will walk, the talks you will hear, will do nothing but endear you to this land. Treat it well as others have done before.

Chuckwalla National Monument Then

Chuckwalla is a desert place, despite what seems in many of the pictures that show its hills and mountains. It is where the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts meet, and contains geological features you will marvel at, landscapes to the sky, and is habitat to endangered species. You like turtles don't you; let's keep the Agassiz's Desert Tortoise around. There are five wilderness areas, including Mecca Hills with it huge canyons, Chuckwalla Mountains, Little Chuckwalla Mountains, the Milipitas Wash, Orocopia Mountains, and the Palo Verde Mountains.

Part of its history has a more modern bent. In 1942, General George Patton trained his troops for desert warfare in World War II on this land. Plus the Eagle Mountain Railroad used to run ore from the mines in the area. Very little remains of it.

Chuckwalla National Monument Now

While Chuckwalla is still home to many of the tribes that have inhabited the area for years, it is also a place to discover Native American heritage, or find a place to hike, camp, mountain bike, and more. Yes, some of those things are prohibited on some trails and wilderness areas, ask where you can do what. Some of the best trails include the Painted Canyon Trail in the Mecca Wilderness and the Bradshaw Trail in the Orocopia Mountains Wilderness. And we might not have said this before, but it is located just south of Joshua Tree National Park, which was expanded by seventeen thousand acres in the proclamation for Chuckwalla.

And how did the park get is name. Well, it was named after the Chuckwalla Lizards. I think they're gonna play in the Pac 12, as long as they sponsor football. Ha!

Things You Should Not Miss

1. Hike the Painted Desert Trail in the Mecca Wilderness Area and get a similar feeling to hiking through the canyons of Utah's Bryce Canyon, although the canyon colors are not quite as bright. Bring plenty of water and snacks.

2. For those that like such things, hike into the wilderness and spend a couple days primitive camping. If that's not for you, stay at the Corn Springs Campground.

3. Got a lot of time and energy, try hiking the six hundred mile corridor that now exists between Chuckwalla and Joshua Tree National Park to Moab, Utah. It was one of the points of getting the National Monument designation, as well as to stop solar windmills and development pressure from taking over the sacred land.
