National Park Service 100th Anniversary

  • Gettysburg 100th Events

    Gettysburg National Military Park will be hosting a variety of 2016 events on their calendar that are considered part of the National Park Service's 100th Anniversary celebrations. Stop back when more information becomes available.

    2016 Events

    First Friday Events, Inspired by Gettysburg

    Date/Time: April 1, May 6, June 3, July 1, August 5, September 2, October 7, November 4. Times: 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
    Location: Lincoln Railroad Station.
    Event: Meet this month's Gettysburg National Military Park Artist-in-Residence and experience the artwork they have created, inspired by the Gettysburg battlefield.

    Gettysburg Artist-in-Residence Workshops

    Date/Time: April 10, 23. Times: 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. (April 10); 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. (April 23).
    Location: Klingel House, 1024 Emmitsburg Road.

    National Junior Ranger Day

    Date/Time: April 16. Times: 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
    Location: Eisenhower NHS, Gettysburg NMP.
    Event: Eisenhower: Children 7-12 are invited to complete the Junior Secret Service Agent Training Manual and earn their badge and certificate. Ranger programs on Eisenhower and the Secret Service will be presented. At Gettysburg: children and families are invited to take part in a special "Hands on History Cart" and Jr. Ranger Station. Civil War trading cards and official Jr. Ranger patches will be presented.

    Spring Battlefield Foray

    Date/Time: April 23-24. Times: Various.
    Location: Gettysburg NMP.
    Event: Special weekend of unique hikes, walks, and talks that focus on the organization, tools, and tactics utilized by the two armies that fought at Gettysburg and on other battles of the Civil War. Co-hosted by the Gettysburg Foundation, this event will bring together historians from the field of academia, park rangers and historians, and licensed battlefield guides to provide a special, in-depth experience in understanding the history of the conflict and provide attendees with an intimate view of the human experience of the war that is not offered throughout the year..

    Come Walk with Me Community Wellness event

    Date/Time: April 30, Rain Date May 1. Times: 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
    Location: Gettysburg Middle School.
    Event: First Annual Adams County Come Walk With Me event at the Gettysburg Middle School Stadium. The fitness fair at Warrior Stadium in Gettysburg, with a large, group walk through Gettysburg National Military Park's Culp's Hill. Participants can enjoy music, snacks and chances to win prizes.

    Doors Open Gettysburg

    Date/Time: May 7. Time: 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
    Location: Various building around park.
    Event: The National Park Service will open eight buildings on the Gettysburg battlefield to the public for a rare look at recent preservation projects and buildings badly in need of repair.

    Presidential Paint and Wine Nights at Eisenhower

    Date/Time: May 19. Times: TBD.
    Location: Eisenhower NHS.
    Event: The event features a tour of the Eisenhower home and a ranger talk about Eisenhower's hobby of oil painting. Participants see some of Ike's original works of art, followed by painting instruction and refreshments.

    Gettysburg BioBlitz

    Date/Time: May 20. Times: TBD.
    Location: Lincoln Elementary School.
    Event: One-day BioBlitz for grade school students from the Gettysburg school district. Activities will be based at Lincoln Elementary stadium, woodlot, pond, and nearby battlefield lands. The day will include biodiversity discovery activities focusing on amphibians, pollinators, invasive plants, birds and aquatic macro-invertebrates. In the evening, the park will collect acoustical data from bats..

    Journey Through Hallowed Ground Vodcast Premiere

    Date/Time: June 1. Times: 6:00 p.m.
    Location: Eisenhower NHS.
    Event: Premiere of the Gettysburg Area Middle School's "Of the Student, By the Student, For the Student" vodcasts focusing on President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Two vodcasts were created by 8th grade students and depict the events around the Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev visit to the Eisenhower Farm and Eisenhower's presentation of an award to Dr. Jonas Salk for discovering a vaccine for Polio. Public will be allowed to drive to the site.

    Gettysburg National Military Park Brass Band Concert

    Date/Time: June 11. Times: 2:00 p.m. (Museum); 5 p.m. (Pennsylvania Memorial).
    Location: Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center/Pennsylvania Memorial.
    Event: Wildcat Regimental Band performance.

    Art of Gettysburg exhibit

    Date/Time: Late June. Times: TBD.
    Location: Gilder Lehrman Gallery of the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center.
    Event: Paintings, sculpture and decorative arts from the collections of Gettysburg NMP, the Civil War Museum of Philadelphia and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Fee required.

    Sacred Trust Talks and Book Signings

    Date/Time: July 1-3. Times: Evening July 1; 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 2; 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 3
    Location: Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center.
    Event: Historians, authors, National Park Service Rangers and others provide talks and book signings about Gettysburg and the Civil War.

    Ike and Mamie Eisenhower's 100 Wedding Anniversary

    Date/Time: July 9. Times: Day.
    Location: Eisenhower NHS.
    Event: Park rangers will present programs on the lives and relationship of the Eisenhowers.

    Ford Family Day

    Date/Time: August 6. Times: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
    Location: Gettysburg NMP.
    Event: An activity filled day for adults and children alike, Cyclorama, film and museum tickets and special events are free, courtesy of the Ford Motor Company Fund.

    Civil War Music Muster

    Date/Time: August 13-14. Times: Various.
    Location: Various sites.
    Event: Free performances take place at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center and other sites.

    National Park Service Founders Day

    Date/Time: August 25. Times: Various.
    Location: Gettysburg NMP.
    Event: Celebrate the 100th birthday of the National Park Service at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center.

    Gettysburg Battlefield Marathon

    Date/Time: November 6. Times: TBD.

    Veterans' Day/Community Appreciation Day

    Date/Time: November 11. Times: Various.
    Location: Gettysburg NMP.
    Event: The film, Cyclorama painting and museum exhibits at Gettysburg National Military Park are free to all military veterans all residents of Adams County, Pa. for the day, as is the David Wills House and the Eisenhower National Historic Site.

    Eisenhower Home Holiday Events

    Date/Time: December 1-31. Times: Various.
    Location: Eisenhower NHS/Gettysburg NMP.
    Event: The Eisenhower home at the Eisenhower National Historic Site is decorated in the traditions of the Eisenhowers.
