National Park Service 100th Anniversary

    Mesa Verde National Park will be finalizing their 2016 events soon. For now, they have a number of 2016 events on the calendar that they consider part of the National Park Service's 100th Anniversary celebrations. Stop back for more info on time and place when they become available.

    Mesa Verde Winter Festival

    Date/Time: January 16
    Location: Mesa Verde National Park.
    Event: Ski races, Games for Kids, and a whole lot more.

    Full-Moon Shoeshoe Hike

    Date/Time: January 23
    Location: Mesa Verde National Park, Morefield Campground.
    Event: Don't miss this special opportunity to enjoy the experience of a Mesa Verde Winter by moonlight! Activities include: Skiing Meadow Bliss, Snowshoeing the new Cottontail Loop, Warming your toes with some hot cocoa, Joining a ranger for stories and star gazing (weather permitting).

    Premiere Screening of "Heart of the World: Colorado's National Parks"

    Date/Time: March 23-24, 7:00 p.m.
    Location: Sunflower Theater, Cortez (March 23); Fort Lewis College, Durange (March 24).
    Event: Producer/director Chris Wheeler will introduce the film and answer questions at the end of each screening. Profiled in the full documentary series, to be released April 4 are: Mesa Verde National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve and Colorado National Monument.The series tells the stories of five of the most amazing parks on the planet.Each episode fuses together the natural histories of each park. The documentary combines stunning photography of the parks filmed through the seasons; breathtaking helicopter aerials; inspirational on-camera interviews; outstanding wildlife shots and fascinating 3D graphics to tell the stories of five of the most remarkable places on the planet.

    Celebrating National Park Week - Curation Tour of the Mesa Verde Visitor & Research Center

    Location: Mesa Verde Visitor & Research Center.
    Event: A behind-the-scenes tour of the museum collections and archives of Mesa Verde National Park with Dr. Tara Travis. The tours are limited to 10 people. Call to register.

    Balcony House Sunrise Tour

    Date/Time: May 7 5:30 a.m., June 20-21 5:15 a.m., September 21/22 6:15 a.m., October 10 6:30 a.m.
    Location: Balcony House.
    Event: Begin your day as the Ancestral Pueblo people have for generations. Climb into Balcony House as the sun rises, and step into the 21st century of our national parks. On this 90-minute tour, you will climb a 32-foot (9.8 m) ladder, crawl through and 18-inch wide (45 cm) and 12-foot (3.7 m) long tunnel, and climb up a 60-foot (20 m) open cliff face with stone steps and two 10-foot (3 m) ladders to exit. Limited to 25 people, fee, call to register.

    Native American Dances

    Location: Mesa Verde National Park Visitor Center.
    Event: The Lomayestewa family, from Shungopavi village on Second Mesa, invites you to watch traditional Hopi dances.

    Four Corners Lecture Series

    Date/Time: July 22, August 19; 7:00 p.m.
    Location: Chapin Mesa Museum auditorium.
    Event: July 22 - Brian Forist will present "Thatís How It Was in the Cs: The Work and Legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps at Mesa Verde & Beyond" as part of the Four Corners Lecture Series. August 19 - Larry Gore will present "Happy Birthday, National Park Service. One Hundred Years of Birth and Growth of Americaís Best Idea" as part of the Four Corners Lecture Series.

    Founder's Day

    Date/Time: August 25
    Location: Mesa Verde National Park.
    Event: Celebration of the 100th Birthday of the National Park Service. Two Curation Tours of the Mesa Verde Visitor & Research Center. Each focus on the artifacts and archives associated with Mesa Verde's "famous folks". Come learn about interesting people from the past that helped shape Mesa Verde National Park. Tours scheduled for 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. Limited to 10 people. Traditional Pueblo Dances and Cultural Demonstrations throughout the day.

    Pueblo Pottery Demonstration

    Date/Time: September 10, 10:30 a.m.
    Location: Mesa Verde National Park Visitor Center.
    Event: Starr Tafoya from Santa Clara Pueblo, is an award winner at the Santa Fe Indian Market. Join her for a demonstration, firing, and sale of her black and redware pottery.

    Mesa Verde Fun Run

    Date/Time: September 17
    Location: Chapin Mesa Headquarters Area.
    Event: Participate in a 5K run on the Mesa Top Loop, and a one-mile fun walk around the headquarters/museum loop. Fee.

    Evening at the Museum for Kids

    Date/Time: October 21, 6:00 p.m.
    Location: Mesa Verde National Park.
    Event: Do your kids like the Night at the Museum movies? If so, they may be interested in an evening of fun activities at the Mesa Verde Visitor & Research Center. The kid's activities will prove both entertaining and educational for children between the ages of 9 to 11. Event will be led by Dr. Tara Travis, Museum Curator, park staff and volunteers.

    Luminaria Holiday Open House

    Date/Time: December 8, 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
    Location: Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum and Spruce Tree House.
    Event: On Thursday, December 8, 2016, the staff of Mesa Verde National Park will host the 2016 Annual Holiday Open House from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm in the Chapin Mesa headquarters area. Everyone is invited to join park staff in this holiday celebration featuring luminarias, musical entertainment and refreshments.
